Abstract:

Chiefly copy photographs of photographs related to the history of Marin County, and of views of San Francisco during the gold rush, including reproductions of 1850s wood engravings, and portraits. Scenes in Marin County, San Rafael, and a few related to San Quentin date to approximately 1890-1910. Other items include views from Virginia City, Washington State, and various California towns. Original 19th century photographs present include a J.J. Reilly stereograph of an 1870s excursion party in Yosemite Valley with names noted on the back, a view of the Nicasio Hotel exterior, an excavator at a quarry or pit mine near Ione, California, the Presbyterian Church at Ione (photographed by C. Sutterley), staff in front of an unidentified publishing house, a candy store and ice cream parlor interior, loggers felling a redwood near Crescent City (by Charles Suhr), and a small wood frame church or school displaying large bells, probably in Marin County. Original cartes de visite portraits of Clotilda Reed and Rev. John White, both of Marin County, are present. Several 1930s snapshots of an event at the restored Fort Ross are included. Also includes two copy photographs of watercolor drawings by Richard Beechey (HMS Blossom) of Petropaulski (Petropavlovsk), Kamchatka in 1827.
Family groups in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area (ca. 1890-1910?).
